Wardrobe + Posing Tips

Choosing Your Wardrobe Style

Your clothing choice says a lot about your professional image. Choose the style that best suits your team:

Style 1: Business Professional

  • Men: Sport coat, suit pants, dress shirt, tie, polished shoes

  • Women: Blouse with skirt or trousers, or a suit jacket over a dress

Style 2: Business Casual

  • Men: Sport coat with a dress shirt, no tie

  • Women: Nice blouse or dress, no jacket required

Style 3: Casual Professional

  • Men: Dress shirt, with or without a sweater or cardigan (ensure it’s well-pressed)

  • Women: Dress, blouse, or sweater

MAKEUP / HAIR / NAILS
Please arrive with your hair styled and makeup applied as you typically wear it. We recommend giving yourself a little extra time to get ready on the day of your headshot session—if your usual routine takes 20 minutes, plan for 30–40 minutes instead. This will give you the opportunity to fine-tune the details, such as blending your makeup evenly and ensuring your hair is styled just the way you like it.

Before leaving the house, take a few extra moments for a final check in the mirror. Commonly overlooked things—like stray nose hairs, unkempt eyebrows, or food in your teeth—can make a noticeable difference in photos. It might feel redundant, but this extra attention can go a long way in helping you feel confident and photo-ready.

WOMEN: Please use new mascara. Even mascara that is a month old tends to clump. Bring a variety of lip colors with you in case your first choice doesn’t look good on camera. Spend extra time blending foundation and eye shadows. Make sure your foundation is blended into your neck as well around your jaw line.

A NOTE FOR THOSE WHO WEAR GLASSES
Glasses with an anti-glare (anti-reflective) coating and lenses that are not light-sensitive (like transition lenses) work best for photos. If there’s a noticeable glare or if your lenses darken in response to light, we may ask you to remove your glasses so your eyes are clearly visible.

If you’re concerned your glasses might be problematic, consider bringing an alternate pair without glare or transition lenses. Another option is to use a pair of identical frames with the lenses temporarily removed—this isn’t noticeable in the final image but eliminates the risk of glare altogether.

What To Expect

IF YOU ARE COMING TO OUR STUDIO:

Our studio is our converted garage. It is temperature regulated (we have heat and a/c). There is a changing area and mirror for you to do last minute touch-ups. You can pull your car all the way up to the garage when you arrive for easy loading and unloading. We have a bathroom in our home you are welcome to use.

IF WE ARE COMING TO YOUR OFFICE:

Often, appointment times are set for each person. Please arrive at our photo station at your appointment time ready to go and we will direct you the next steps.

Additional Headshot Tips

  • Choose your outfit well in advance of your photo session. Once selected, hang your clothing and set it aside in your closet so it's ready to go. Planning ahead helps reduce day-of stress and minimizes the chance of forgetting anything important.

  • If possible, bring the shirt you plan to wear for your headshot on a hanger, freshly ironed, and change into it just before your session. This helps avoid any wrinkles, stains, or accidental spills (especially from that morning coffee!).

  • Arrive on time, ready to go. Our process is efficient and designed to be quick and stress-free.

  • Take a deep breath before stepping in front of the camera. This helps you appear relaxed and natural.

  • Practice your smile in the mirror at home before you arrive. It may feel silly, but it makes a difference!

  • Enhance your jawline by gently extending your neck forward and pointing your chin slightly down.

  • Leave stress at the door. Whether it’s a rough commute or a hectic morning, try to arrive with a calm, confident mindset.

  • Only bring clothes you love. If you don’t love it off-camera, you won’t love it in photos.

  • Use layers and accessories. A jacket, sweater, or cardigan adds texture. For women, a bracelet can bring subtle style and balance to a shot.
